Thermostatic Radiator valves.

I fitted these traditional radiator valves as i have cast iron radiators an the drayton style TRV would look a bit out of place.
Just a few questions guys.
1. Does Bi-Directional mean that they can be fitted to either the flow or return end of the rad ?
2. I understand about answers relating to the best TRV's relating to build quality but which seem to be the best in terms of consistently shutting off at exactly the same temperature day after day or the best at sensing the surrounding temperature ?
3. Finally, my Dad's heating system has old Gun Barrell piping throughout. Is there some sort of adapter that allows standard TRV's to be coupled to this pipework or what is needed ?
