Hi all,

The corner spindle on our landing is cracked (pic attached). I’ve seen a couple of complicated videos to repair them but wondered if people thought it was easier to buy a new spindle and insert it? (How easy is it to remove and insert a new spindle?) I don’t know where to start, any help appreciated

Thanks

Removing is simple , just a saw cut thru thinnest section and pull away .
Need photo of bottom to see the style of base .?

If the crack, is where it appears to be, straight across the thinnest part - I would be inclined to try to repair the spindle in situ....

Pull the spindle to one side, so you are able to bore a hole down the centre, into the lower part, and up into the upper part, to accept a metal pin or rod, of around 4mm diameter. After making sure you can dry reassemble both parts, with the pin - Fill both holes with two part 24 hour resin, and reassemble, bracing the spindle, so it sets up, perfectly straight. Leave it until next day, then scrape, sand of the surplus, and repaint.

Normally the handrail is grooved and when the spindles are put in, a length of thin batten is used to in between each spindle to lock them into place.

Same at the bottom

If the spindle is a standard burbridge pattern you might get a match off the shelf, otherwise you can get a wood turner to make one for you, just take another spindle out and send them that as a template.

Thanks for your detailed response. That is where the crack is yeh, so I might give it a try. Can I just vote a hole with a regular drill bit? And after the pin and resin are in the holes, how would you go about bracing it in place?

Yes just a drill bit, but it would need to be in the centre, and parallel to the spindle.

Brace it with two straight bits of timber, lashed to two adjacent sides of the spindle.
