Not sure if this is the right place to ask about this, but here goes anyway.

I am starting a total refit of my bathroom. The walls will be re-tiled and the suite replaced.

Whilst starting to remove the tiles, I have noticed that the basin is fitted directly to the brick. It has then been plastered and tiled around. Therefore when I remove it I will have a basin shaped hole in the plaster with bare brick visible.

Is this normal?

Should I aim to fix my new basin directly to the brick or should I plan to plaster the 'hole' first then fix the basin to the new plaster?

Any help appreciated.

Would suggest plastering first and fixing to the plastered wall.

Nothing is normal.

You could make life easier for yourself by tiling the wall first and fixing basin and WC cistern to the tiled wall hence avoiding a lot of tile cutting round these items.

...and this way it will be easier to fit a new one when the old one gets cracked.

Don't put a shelf or cabinet over the basin, women like to put glass bottles and jars in them and accidentally drop them into the basin, cracking it.
