Fixing a handrail

I have a stair handrail which I need to fix onto the wall. It is of the sort without brackets, basically just a 3 metre length of wood which was originally nailed to the wall with what looks like 5 inch floorboard nails. How would you recommend fixing this back on the wall? I am thinking of rawl plugs and screws.
