Hi all,
Long term reader of this forum for tips and what not and it’s high time I created an account now to contribute as it’s time to post for some advice so hoping you knowledgable people can advise.
I’ve just had my drive relaid. Relatively happy with the job. Now onto the gate which I’ll be fitting myself.
The opening between my pillars is 3.9m. Each leaf will be 1.95m. Undecided on whether it’ll be an aluminium or composite gate but whichever it will be it’ll be open at the top half and privacy at the bottom. Manual opening. Will open once in the morning, rest on drop bolts and then close at night. Not constantly opening.
Now for the pillars. They sit on around 600mm deep pads which were poured by the drive guys, 2x2 brick and are 1.7m high. They’re filled with a 1 cement, 2 sand, 3 10mm aggregate mix around 4 16mm rebars resined 200mm into each corner of the footings with around 50mm between the bars and brickwork. Brickwork built first then concrete poured in after 7 days.
The footings are continuous with garden wall footings. One goes out of the back of the right pillar for 6m on which a 450mm high garden wall sits. This is tied to the pillar with ties across every course.
The other goes out of the left pillar for 1m, turns 90° left and carries on for 12m with a branch of 6m off it. Again garden walls 450mm high sitting on these. Also tied to back of pillar.
Intention is to bolt a steel post to the BACK of the pillars and hinges off that it to get the gate to swing past 90°.
My question is - is this arrangement ‘strong’ enough?
