Fixing heavy radiator to stud wall

I need to hang a heavy radiator onto a stud wall. The vertical studs are not in the correct place to use them to hang the radiator on so I'm going to put a couple of horizontal battens in.

Is this the best/correct way to do it?

asabove or just cut out and replace with some ply,or install some proper noggins where needed and then replaster board.
