As the title says got an old flat and traditional plug type fixings for screws haven't been too succesful, I'm finding the plaster is quite powdery so it tends to break up just as the screw starts to grip and the plug pulls out. It's also pot luck if you catch a stud so looking for an alternative to hang a new radiator.

radiators are heavy and can rip out if someone stumbles into them or grabs hold.

Work out where the studs are (you may be able to find them by tapping, using a stud detector, or drilling a trial hole and poking stiff wire sideways.

Fix a couple of battens, to the studs, using long woodscrews, at the level where your radiator bracket screws will be. The battens should bridge as many studs as possible and be almost as long as the rads. they will be out of sight once the rads are hung and you can paint them to match the walls. Screw the brackets to these battens. You can turn the brackets to their smaller depth.
