Just a quickie,

Has anyone got any tips for fixing stud 4x2 to lathes when the studs in the wall are nowhere to be seen?

Cheers

I normally just drill a few test holes to find something solid in a position that will be eventually behind the stud to be fixed, or am I not understanding what you are asking?

Ok, all the existing internal walls are lath and plaster, the dining room is being cut in half with a new stud wall running through the middle the studs at either end of the new stud wall need to be fixed to the existing lath and plaster walls, but within these walls i haven't landed on a stud and only have lathes to connect to. Logically i could put noggins in but this will cause to much damage to the existing walls.

Mark out and cut out wall where new wall meets old and install a stud in the old wall.

You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs.

i have hung a fairly substantial shelve from lath and plaster
simply drilled a 3mm pilot hole then used no10 screws[5mm]
the pilot was to stop the screw pushing the lath away no plugs where used

i would suggest as your building a stud and 90% off the load will be sideways so the direction the laths will have most strength

i would say try my method and if its not solid you have lost nothing
just hack out and do it properly

Indeed omellete eggs, went for BigAlls approach but made a right bl••dy mess, atleast it will hold the fire door, cheers.
