I would be grateful for some practical advice on the following DIY job.

My daughter's house is about 25 years old. The walls are covered internally with plasterboard and I want to fix curtain rails above french doors. There is,however, a gap of about 20mm between the rear of the plasterboard and the wall which will, I guess, have a lintel within.

I would like to fix a long 100x20mm batten to the wall above the door to which I would screw the curtain rail supports.

I do not know what the best method of securely fixing the batten would be, having regard to the plasterboard surface and the gap behind and advice from someone who has successfully made such a fixing would be appreciated.

The lintel will usually only extend about 6 inches past the doorway if you use a batten longer than that you should be able to rawlplug into brick behind the plasterboard either side. Some intermediate plasterboard plugs and a good dollop of building adhesive on the back of the batten should do the trick ;)
