I've noticed some building and property have a copper flat strip approx 1" wide starting at the top of the roof tiles then down onto the wall below.Where does it start from and finish? Is it a earth protection from thunder lightning ? if so why haven't all property got it etc?

Hey,no rush for this :) do the important topic first :!:

As far as I know it is a Lightning conductor which will carry any strike down to the earth. It is connected to a copper rod which is hammered into the ground and usually it is the tallest buildings like churches etc that have them because the theory is that lightning has more chance of striking a taller building. I don't know why that's the case but maybe someone ' in the know ' can enlighten us.

you are right DAZB, the reason it is only on tall buildings is that being taller as you said it is more likeley to get struck.

Did you also know that the lightening first travels UP (all be it a small strike) then the main "bolt" comes down

It is caused by the cloud particles building up a charge to such an extent it has to go some where, so it "looks" for the shortest route (tall building, tree etc.)

do you also know why you shouldn't stand under a tree in a thunder storm?
Yes ok the lightening may hit the tree, but did you know that if it does the tree sap is instantly boiled and the tree actually EXPLODES.(not in all cases i admit)

But i am sure if you want to know more there is a web site about it

Thanks for that,

Now the next question,I have a metal sheeting on top of my summerhouse should this be earth or am I going over the top?

If you ever get to see the result of a lightning strike. Especially on electronic equipment you will begin to think that a lightning conductor on your own home may not be a bad idea.

Before you ask NO I havnt got one here...

funny you should say that, i once went to a converted garage (used as a workshop) that had a direct hit.

Across the ceiling and down one wall was bright pink lines, its what was left of the lighting cable

Breezer.. I have seen many times the effects of lightning.. Horrendus damage.you could not imaginen the damage ( or possibly can)
X million volts makes a terrible mess

The reason I asks the question is,I noticed it on old people rest home and quite a lot a property in London area that only approx 40' high building with a copper earth strip and that what made me think am I missing something here?

i was joking about 350 feet, quite a lot of places have it done as a precaution
