I think you're on the right track with the spanner
Since you're replacing it you could always just cut it so you're not working at that awkward angle but maybe wrap some tape around the bit you cut

As above, it needs a spanner. It uses an o-ring as a seal so it should unscrew with ease, assuming that you first undo the nut at the copper pipe end, if you don't you might not be able to undo the braided pipe because it will start to kink.
