Hi

I would like to apply a coat of sand and cement render over some LBC sandfaced bricks that are now inside my kitchen..

I tried a small area but the bond between the brick and scratch coat failed as it sounded hollow in a couple of places so I ended up hacking this off.

The method I used was:
1:1 SBR:water painted on the brick and left to dry
1:1 SBR:water painted on then scratch coat applied when still wet
4:1 plastering sand:portland cement with plasticiser in the mix was my scratch coat mix.

It appeared to dry out killer quick as I was ruling it off so I assume there was still too much suction from the bricks it was even a little dusty in places.

For my next try would I be better applying a slurry / scud coat to the bricks first if so whats the recommended mix? 1 cement to 1 plastering sand mixed with 1 water to 1 SBR, flung on and left to dry?

Get yourself a tyrolean /flicker gun
4:1 sand /cement slurry with 1/2 lime .
mix in a plasterers bucket with a cup of sbr in the water.
place in the oven 190 for 35 mins .
nah , just wait for it to cure and render over.
remove any sandy stuff and dampen the wall first.
