Float valve adjustment

Fitted a new toilet a few weeks ago: just discovered that the float valve needs adjustment. Valve arrangement shown in the instructions that came with the toilet is different to what's in the cistern, and now that the thing is fitted I can't really see what's going on in there, float valve wise.

I've attached a pic: seems to me that with this kind of valve you release a clip in order to slide the float valve up and down, then pop the clip back where it came from. Would this be right? There's also a screwed spindle thingy which also seems designed to adjust the point at which the water shuts off..tried winding this up and down but so far the effects seem negligible.

Thank you. The water is cutting off about an inch below the fill line, which is why I thought it might need adjustment. I'll wind up/ down the pozi thing to suit.
