Hi all, below is photo of a section of my kitchen ceiling - as you can see, all the joists (7x2) have been notched deeply (over 2") right at centre span (10ft) for the central heating pipes. Not content with this, the electician has come along and drilled 1" holes beneath the notches. Unsurprisingly, the floor in the bedroom upstairs is a bit springy - the wardrobe doors rattle when you walk in.
I'm puzzled as to why on earth it was done like this as this is an extension that can be no older than about 25 - 30 years so it would have had the heating pipes and electrics put in when it was built - not some convoluted retrofit.
Anyway... what would be the best way to go about reinforcing this - Just sister up another joist next to each with bolts and toothed washers, moving the heating pipes over to the designated area in the process?
