ah sorry my mistake i thought you meant leave gaps between the sheets of hardboard btw do i stagger the sheets ? i think thats my last question

No, my mistake, sorry.
The expansion gap of the wooden floor should be 10mm all around, the gap between the hardboard sheets 2 -3 mm (credit card wide as we call it, wide enough to slide a credit card through).

thankyou im going to get the hardboard tomorrow i will lay the floorboards dry first as you say but i will try it the long way which will be parallel to the floors if the hardboard and new underlay have evened it out enough i will lay them this way, if not it looks like i will have to have them short ways across the room (perpendicular) which will be stronger but less nicer on the eye thanks for the quick responses
hello again wood you like i laid the floor and im happy with it, all but one thing, on 2 places in particular underneath the skirting where the floor runs underneath, when you walk on it the floor will dip down and spring up by about eighth of an inch where the floor is uneven the worst bit is the skirting next to where the fire was the cement bit? apart from taking the skirting off and packing the floor out are there any quick fixes you know of? i dont really want to take the skirting off as the room is finished so what do u reckon any quick fixes or am i stuck with it like that? the floor is enginered oak btw cheers m8
How long ago did you finish? (three weeks ago, this weekend?).
i laid the floor a couple of weeks ago but only finished putting the skirting on last week there were a few hicups the **** i bought the floor off said it was unused but when i got it home i found damaged and cut boards and didn't have enough to finish the floor and the line was discontinued, so i had to go out and source some, luckily i found a few packs then i had to find suitable skirting which went on last week, but i've just noticed at a couple of spots on the side by the skirting where the floor is uneven you can make the boards press down when you tread on it, by about eighth of an inch this is whats stopping it from being perfect, someone has suggested squirting clear silicone underneath the skirting rather than take the skirting boards off, im not sure this will work i would rather leave it if there is no quick fix, i just thought i would ask you if you knew any quick fixes
Could be that some of the boards were bowed. When you place a spirit level on that spot what does it tell you? Does pressing the board down make the floor "level" or does the spirit level tell you differently?
Adding materials underneath a "dipping" board might cause more problems in the long run if any of the boards were not really straight and need more time than normal to "settled down".
Always check what is dipping, the board or the underfloor, first before trying to resolve it.

Ignore this posting, pressed wrong button and quoted when all I wanted to do was add something to the above posting 
high wood you like, i have just done the sprit level test and it doesent make any difference to the bubble,as the spirit level stays in the same place while the floor just dips down underneath it when i press it having the same effect as the skirtingboard if that makes sense,i know for a fact that the floor is out because of the concrete part of the floor where the fire was i had leveled this out to the existing surrounding floorboards but they in turn was higher than the floorboards where the dip is i think that the hardboard i laid did not straighten this bit up enough ,on this part the sprit level says the floor is on a slight run, if you look closely and stand back you can see that the place where the fire place was is a few mills higher than either side of it (hardley noticable until you stand on the spot that dips) and then theres the dip on one of the other walls again you cant see it until you stand on it, i have a wordrobe on that part and you can see it pulling away rom the skirting by a few mm i guess im stuck with it, its no big deal cheers though m8
