Pleease can someone help. I live in the central Highlands of Scotland in a timber style cottage we recently had the roof insulated but find we loose a great deal of heat and get a lot of draughts from the floor which is the suspended type, however there is not enough room under the floor for someone to get underneath and put polystyrene type insulation. We have looked at the insulating floorboards but as these are a minimum of 2" thick it is not practicable to lay them on top of current floorboards its also not poss to replace all current floorboards, does anyone know of a way of doing this job but with a maximum depth of say 10 - 15 mil that carpets can be laid over.
many thanks exbloomer

Can you not lift the boards ?

You could then use fibre-wool insulation between the joists which is much cheaper than the insulating boards and the result would be that you would be much warmer and lose no height in the room.

Many thanks for the advice, I think that may well be the route we have to take, although we didn,t really want to lift floorboards.

If you are planning on carpeting it then it may not be worth trying to insulate. By far the main problem with heat loss in suspended floors is from draughts between exposed floors and skirting etc.

Sealing up the joints around the edges at thresholds skirting etc and fitting a decent underlay and carpet will may a dramatic difference.

Hi thanks for that. We are now considering putting down a layer of hardboard over the top of the floorboards before carpeting etc. as the gaps are so wide.
