Is it normal to have a home built in the last 15-20 years (an average sized 3 bed semi) with no internal supporting walls?
Joists facing all the same way with a central beam not supported on anything other than the external walls

It depends on the joists. There are plenty of house builders using web joists or ply joists which can achieve 6M+ span. What is the largest span?
