I plan to build a full width 2 storey extentioin at the back of the house. I intend to build the structure and roof before knocking through. How do I ensure that the floor levels are exactly the same on the extention. I have seen some where the floor levels differ by 4" or more.

to find the exact floor height you can take a brick out from the outside wall roughly where the floor level is then you will see the height of the existing joist.once you know the height of the existing joists you can chop out bricks for the new joists to sit on the wall then the floor will be the same level......ian

You could use a water level to transfer the floor level to the outside wall.(water filled tube with glass or clear plastic ends. Try Screwfix for supplier.) This way you need not take out any bricks, you can pass the level through a lower level window. The egyptians used water levels. Accurate to one eighth of an inch...in a mile!
