Floor Tiles... What are they?

Just brought a new house and no idea what these tiles are.
They are not smooth, more rough uneven surface tile and appear porous.
They are full of grime and dirt from people walking through the kitchen over the years, and scrubbing them clean is taking for ever!!
Can anyone suggest what they are and the best way to clean them?

They feel like stone, not shine to them and what can only be described as snail trails going trough them

Guys,
After the post last night I routed the shed and found a box and they are porcalin tiles.

Now let me tell you, I have poured hot boiling water on them, wiped them, cleaned them but nothing cleans them.

The only way I can bring them up to anything near what they should be like is by getting on all fours, scrubbing them with a scouring pad and washing with clean water afterwards.

Below is a picture showing the difference after the scrubbing... is their an easier way to do this?

Steam cleaner?
