floorboards resting on heating pipes

Rip one of the two boards lengthwise, and fit the two halves either side of a full width board over the pipes.

this i like, means i can use the floorboards i have already bought & saving money not buying ply.
now sawing the long length of the floorboard with a handsaw...hum...

Can someone who understands that please explain it to me?

He means that the notch isn't in the centre of the floorboard. The notch is at the edge of the board and under the edge of the board next to it.

So two long edges of the floorboards are floating in space with not support.

The idea of cutting a board in half lengthways to allow one board to span the notch is a good one.

If its too much effort to cut by hand and the OP doesn't have a suitable power saw, a cheap jigsaw will probably cost less than the appropriate amount of ply from B&Q and will be the right thickness with no packing required.

Get it done!
- Wont take that long with a half decent panel saw, how long is your house!

Daniel

All done now with hand/panel saw, 2 lengths from the landing into the box room cut & screwed down to joists in a couple of hours, all feels good walking on it.
