flue into half an exisitng chimney

The house is an extended bungalow and the original chimney pot is visible in the loft still.

I want to fit a wood burner - how could I use the existing chimney? Would it have to be extended to roof level or just have the flue poking out and exiting the roof?

Any thoughts?
