Are 5ft 80 watt fittings still available? No one seems to list them and the light output of the new 58 watt ones is pathetic in comparison.

Replacement ballast, some cable tray, a oouple of tool clips to hold the tube and choc-block to fit over the pins - jobs a good'un...

You be able to get 65w tubes for 5ft fittings, not seen an 80w one before.
If that doesn't work put a twin one up

80 watt were mainly used in freezers as their control gear worked better in the cold, you are unlikely to get them now, as all inch and half tubes starting to be phased out next year and will not be allowed to be sold..

try a triphosphor or an 840 tube

Is that another stupid ruling from a bunch of idiots that don't seem to have a clue of the impact?
I'd better get stockpiling 5ft tubes to go with the 100w lamps now!

To do with the Gas :)

All the tubes will be triphosphor like 835 840 etc, even the inch diameter cheap gas like 535 and 540 etc will go also.
even son ballasts not safe all gonna be electronic.
Thorn currently doing a big promo, you will see it in the wholesalers soon.

Electronic SON ballasts were no where near as reliable as the old wire wound ones.
Looks like technology like capacitance start for fluoro fittings will be out of the window too - they don't like slimline tubes.

Thanks for the interesting replies - (I like BAS idea, but surprised he suggested it). It seems that the environMENTAL lobby have won again. How it saves energy to use a twin 58watt instead of single 80 watt for the same light output beats me. Still, I have good stocks of 60 watt,100 watt and 150 watt incandescent and some 1 and half inch 80 watt tubes. (PS anyone near Liskeard got any 80 watt fittings around)

Why would you want to keep stocks of crappy GLS incandescent lamps?

CFL's have never given me any problems and use less power, and now they're nicely widespread they're cheap too.

yes it is just that. They think only about saving power and only that, the other consequential problems are beyond their brain power to think about

Cold store and the new lights just fitted don't work, the tubes won't strike at minus 38 C.

But not dimmable.

Perhaps, but ive never felt the need to dim the lights in any room.

If i'm in the study/kitchen etc working, i require full brightness.

If i'm in the sitting room, i either run the overhead light (which has 5x11w CFL's in a stupid chandalier thing) for bright illumination or a couple of small CFL equipped lamps for the evening when i'm chilled out watching telly.

Same goes with the bedroom, overhead light when bright is required and a small lamp on the bedside for dim lighting.

I do agree that these muppets continually rush in with stupid legislation without thinking, but i dont really see the issue with incandescent lamps...

Dimming is a requirement for many, but it can be solved by replacing the luminaires, not just the lamps.

I don't have a problem with phasing out incandescents, but IMO they have not picked the right priority target, which should have been 2" spots. They were not (or are not yet) banned because they are over an arbitrary figure of lumens/W, but that completely ignores the amount of wattage needed to light rooms.

I do have a problem with the following:

1) The way that people are encouraged to just fit CFL replacements, as the waste involved in these lamps is terrible.

2) The lack of any awareness campaign about the need to dispose of dead lamps properly because of the mercury in them.
