The plot thickens. I had just bought a Fluidmaster flush and took the wood work away from around the cistern expecting to see the pipe between bowl and cistern connect with a threaded adaptor.
Instead the pipe is connected directly to a flange moulded in the cistern

So, looks time for a new cistern. I assume that if I get one of these

the innards are the same parts as those sold separately?
I assume the vertical section of pipe can be trimmed for length?
