Hi everyone. I hope someone can help me.

The offside drivers window of my Ford Escort MK6 has failed to open and close for a while now, and after having it checked out by my local car mechanic I was told that I need a new motor and regulator costing an excessive amount of money.

The mechanic said that I might be better to try and obtain a good second-hand spare part and either fit it myself, or have him do it for me.

I contacted a local vehicle dismantler and was quoted £10 for the motor and regulator complete, so long as I remove it from the scrap vehicle.

I have since removed the motor and drive and now need to fit it to my own car.

Here is where my problems begin.

In order to remove the motor and regulator is was necessary to drill out 7 rivet heads. The body of the old rivets still remain in the holes of the motor housing that now require new rivets to be fitted.

I have tried to remove these old rivet body's, but when attempting to drill them out, they just spin around and around. I cannot get anything on them to hold them stationary while drilling, and they cannot be pulled out.

The rivet holes in the motor body are surrounded by rubber, and I cannot see any way that I can get to the rear of the rivet hole in order that I could push the old rivet out the back.

Has anyone here encountered these problems, and what did you do about them?

I can only assume that as the mechanic I originally spoke to, suggested that a second hand motor could be fitted, he must have known that it was possible. Presumably he knew a way of removing the original rivet stubs.

Incidentally, my Haines car manual simply says that when fitting a new motor, 'obtain the correct size rivets.' Very helpful!

Can anyone suggest what size these rivets should be?

can you apply some araldyte or similar to bond them to stop them spinning and then re drill,a bit over the top but may work, usually holding or wedging a small screwdriver in is enough to get the drill bit to bite
