Him, I was just driving along and a scraping noise started, which sounds as if it is coming from my steering wheel. I would be grateful if anybody has any idea c
What could be wrong

Hardly from the steering wheel, methinks......can you coast with your head out of the window, listening to the road wheels, and gently press the brake pedal.
Any difference?
John :)

Hi,
Did what you suggested this morning. However, no noise at all! Very strange, I did quite a few miles yesterday so perhaps will have to see if it returns today and then try your suggestion again. Watch this space, oh by the way, the scraping noise occurred even when stationary and turning the wheel, which is why I thought it may be the steering wheel

As the noise happens when stationary, thats a new ball game.....!
Does the steering feel notchy at all?
Next, there's one or two things that are in contact with the steering wheel. 1) The indicator stalk cancelling mechanism
2) The air bag contacting ring (name escapes me at the moment)
and thats about it.
So, down at the bottom of the steering column - is anything touching the column as you turn the wheel?

Hi John
The noise seems to have gone, I have been out in the car quite a lot. Driven over 30 miles and no sign of the noise!!

Tempted to leave well alone unless it returns, have checked brake wear and that is not a problem. No noise means no way to track it down at the moment. Do you concur?
Dave

Absolutely Dave - you can't fix a fault that aint there :p
Any real issues will show up at MOT time.
John :)

I recall many years ago a Mk1 Escort came win with a scraping noise on turning the steering. It turned out the clutch cable was touching the shaft down by the steering rack. A securing clip had broken allowing the cable to float around!
