Hi, encoutered a problem with my gearbox today. The car is a Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 1996 Manual.

Driving home I could not select 2nd gear, all other gears are working fine. The gear itself is not selecting at all, no crunching sounds like a missed gear, it just will not slip into place. I tried the method of pumping the clutch but to no avail, the geabox fluid im not sure about, no idea how to check it. So any ideas where I stand on this?

Im thinking its not the clutch as all other gears are fine right now, so maybe a problem with the transmission itself? There were no real indicators that it would fail up until it happened.

Help? Thanks

Sounds similar to a problem my Dad had with his Escort van, the selector rod that runs between the gear lever and gear box was worn and a few days later it broke.

Therefore it is possible that yours could either be on it's way out, or may just be in need of adjustment.

Could also be an engine mounting about to fail. If they 'go soft' the engine/gearbox settles a bit, putting the gear selector linkage out of line.

Thanks for the replies guys. Today I drove the car for about a 20 minute period, as i said the other gears are fine thus far. I was explaining the problem to my father, so he tried the gear himself and it actually went into gear and was fine for a couple of gear changes and then it stopped again.

Does this definatly sound like a selector rod problem? What sort of price range am i looking at to get this fixed? How can I check this myself? And finally is it safe to keep driving the car and just avoiding 2nd gear?

Thanks
