I have a Ford Focus 2.0ltr zetec on a W plate. Yesterday morning when I left for work the steering started to make a loud straining noise, I can hear what sounds like water running through a pump. When I checked the steering fluid level, although it was at the minimum it was a reddy/orange colour and looked quite thick. Is this normal and if not can you tell me what may be wrong and (roughly) how much this is going to cost me? thanks

The noise sounds like what you found - power steering reservoir needs topping up.
Check the manufacturers instructions,as some cars are supposed to have the fluid checked with the wheels at full lock, and others with them straight ahead.
And as for the colour, power steering fluid is the same as automatic transmission fluid, and is meant to be red,so don't panic! (Yet.. :D )
