Is this a common problem and is it cheap/easy to fix? The car was manufactured circa 1998.

The window does not move at all and there are no electrical motor sounds. The light within the button to control the window is not illuminated.

The passenger's side window seem to operate correctly, using the controls both on the passenger door and the driver's door.

All help appreciated.

Easy to change motor if that's what's failed, how cheap depends if you can find a pattern part or one from breakers.

broken wires in the harness to the drivers door are common. inside the rubber conduit between the a pillar and door.

Ocassionally this can be as simple as the wiring for the drivers switch on the drivers door has unclipped. Removing the interior pull handle can show you this.
