Hi folks

Very quick question for you:

can whole bricks be used as a base for the concrete foundations?

I know you can use broken bricks/hardcore etc but our builder insists that whole bricks are fine and thats what he's going to use (left over from the garage thats been demolished).

Thanks :)

The generic term for a sub-base in fill is hard core and is used beneath concrete floors, roads, patios etc.

No hard core is placed beneath the wall foundations, just concrete.

Why would you want to put bricks or any other material into the base of foundations - the concrete can be laid directly off the base of the trench.

However, if you are talking about the oversite then there's no problem in using the brick's - whole or in pieces + any other parts of the demolshed wall but they should be broken up, then level off with some sand blinding - nominal 50mm thickness (general building sand), then lay your dpm (dressed into dpc) and then add the concrete (minimum 100mm thickness). Job Done.
