Friends.

There have been many great American comedies, but 'Friends' isn't one of them!

Anyone remember 'Rowan and Martin''s Laugh-In' with a young Goldie Hawn? From the 1960s, it was shown in its entirety on Channel 4 in the 80s. Fantastic.

And the films of Woody Allen, on telly all the time in the 70s but rarely seen now.

Not to mention Sgt. Bilko, Adams Family, Get Smart, Beverley Hillbillies etc.

Amish Boy.

If you don't belly laugh at the best Friends episodes then you don't understand it. It's not a criticism. Many people don't.
It’s a strange thing but I judge people who don’t like Friends.

Mathew Perry was made to play Chandler. Without him I doubt it would have been or still be so popular.

I am actually surprised. You are a great comic writer and understand comic structure and the craft involved. Friends hid its architecture so completely that people assumed there wasn't any. They saw six good looking people in an apartment and thought it was simple. The writers were probably doing the most complex structural work in sitcom history and making it look like nothing. That's the highest level of craft in any medium.

My grandchildren love Friends, they used to have it on all the time, so I have seen a lot of it, unfortunately! I found it very irritating, with all the 'I was like' talk.

Give me 'Man About the House', 'Rising Damp' and 'George and Mildred' any day.

Coming to it older is difficult. You probably don't want to start on if after your mid 30s. But there are some amazingly plotted episodes which should appeal to anyone.

I remember watching TFI Friday and friends was on after iirc. I wanted to stay and watch it but my mates said it was rubbish and we went to the pub.

Back then most lads my age hated it. I’m a lot like chandler or I was.

you keep saying this without providing any context for the claim - damned if i've read anything funny from him...unless you're talking about one of his many many sockpuppets.

'Friends' was an extension, and a highly successful one, of the type of comedy format done in 'Taxi' and 'Soap'. Those two were unmissable. Lterally unmissable - it was before video recorders and the Internet, so you had to be there in front of the telly for your half-hour of laughs, then wait a week for the next one.
