Out house has a dark feel to it which I'm trying to brighten.

We have a great wooden bannister / balcony which is mahogony stained I think.

We have matching internal doors and doorframes.

Would it make more sense (cheaper) to replace the bannister and doors (which are mainly glass panelled) and door frames than to get them stripped and oak-stained? Either way I would have a tradesman do the jobs.

cheers, Calvados

i would rip out the glass just so your house has a consistant style anyway. IT would help resale value i would have thought and be a proper job instead of trying to take a short cut.

you need to find out what wood its constructed from and how dark a shade it is
you cannot make wood any lighter with stain

thanks guys.

As this may involve creating new door frames and a new bannister - what do I need? a joiner / decorator? a carpenter?...

If they are pine and stained with mahogany, then definataly cheaper to hire a good decorator.
One easy test, buy some sand paper and rub the stain off to see !!
