frost free ices up - every few months

This is a strange one. We've got an Admiral frost-free fridge-freezer. We've had it a while - many years. And it just worked.

Over the last few years something changed - and I am not sure what. The scenario is:

The fridge doesn't get cold.

I check the cooling fins.

They are choked with ice.

I melt it, but it reforms about 5 days later.

I buy and replace the heater / thermostat combination

It's then OK for 6-9 months.

Then it starts again.

It's happened 3 times now.

Am puzzled why... ? Anyone any ideas?

Seal appears to be good (and, poresumably, if the door were once not closed, a defrost cycle would kick it back to normal?).
