Frost stat means can't have variable pump (e.g. alpha2)?

Hi

We have an S plan CH system with header tanks in the loft.
Our boiler is in the garage which is protected by frost&pipe stat located there. When open, this stat fires up the boiler and pump. There is also an automatic bypass valve fitted in the airing cupboard to bridge flow/return from/to the boiler. It is set so that with both CH and HW valves closed, there is just enough pressure to open the valve thus ensuring some flow through the boiler when triggered by the frost stats.

Does this all mean that because there is an ABV we can't have a pump like the alpha2 unless its set to run like a standard fixed speed pump (which seems to negate the point of having it) ? I was thinking that in variable/"proportional" mode that if say in the night, the frost stat triggered, then the pump would start and would "notice" that it needed a lot of pressure to achieve any flow and thus would increase pressure until the ABV opened. So in essence meaning it would work well and we could just set the ABV to an arbitrary but very high pressure threshold so it didn't operate under normal circumstances.

Sorry that's a bit of a wall of text. I hope some kind active or retired pro has got this far !

Many thanks.

Change the ABV for a gate valve like the good old days.

You are right in your assumption. But you need a circuit of some kind to operate the pump overrun as well as the frost protection.

I estimate that around 80% of "A" rated pumps, fitted as a replacement for an older type, will have to be set to Manual mode, simply because of the pump over-run or frost stat issue, what is ridiculous is that when set to manual, "A" rated pumps use up to 25% more power than the older pumps

Where did you pick up that urban myth?
