I was standing in my son's bedroom half an hour ago (I did all the wiring for it last year), when there was a bang which came from the en-suite extractor fan. It's a PIR type. So we isolated it and went closer. It was making a loud hissing sound, even though isolated. Ah, I said, an electrolytic capacitor.
However after a minute the noise still continued. We took the front off, and... nothing, though it was still hissing. Only then I thought to open the window, and the hissing got much louder, and the smel of gas came in.
Long story short, next door's propane cylinder had blown its top off.
