have you tried switching the switch to the off position before switching it back on again.
Some switches need to be pulled down to off before they reset.
A picture of the consumer unit\fuse board would help

Hi thanks for the reply - tried the above!
Its a hager board - the kitchen lights are set into the ceiling - and are halogen 80's - is there something stopping the switch from going back or is it a faulty switch
