G9 Hi-Pin transformer free halogens, can they be dimmed?

I note on MK web site it says their grid switch dimming unit can be used on mains powered Halogen lights and gives GU10 as an example but the initial switch on current is a lot higher than with normal bulbs so I would check what the info on the switch says first as it may blow some dimmer units.

The dimming situation will be the same as other mains halogens. That is yes they can be dimmed but there are a few caveats.

1: halogens have much higher switch on surges than regular incandescents. This means many dimmers have to be derated when used with halogens.
2: dimming defeats the halogen cycle which can reduce the lifetime of the bulbs and/or cause them to yellow. Afaict this is a relatively minor affect though.
3: all incandescents become far less efficiant when dimmed. Grouped switcheing is a much more efficiant option for varying light levels than dimming.

Very well put. I have tried to convey this about the quartz reflecting the active material back to filament before but your post is so to the point.
