G9 LED lamp flashing

I have six of these G9 LED lamps (2.4W 2700K) on wall fittings around my living room.

(Mine look just like these, but were bought from Sainsburys).

They have been working perfectly for many months, if not years. However, just now when I turned them on ONE of them began flashing at about 3 or 4Hz (roughly 3 or 4 times a second). The other five, including its partner in the same fitting, are still illuminated normally.

Of course I shall replace the lamp, but I'd be interested to know what has caused this to happen. Is it just old age, or is there some specific reason why this should happen?

There is no dimmer, just a single simple switch.

EDIT: Just to add, I took put it back in again to demonstrate to the wife when she came in, and when I took it out it continued to flash for a couple of seconds. Something to do with a capacitor?

I suspect the lamp uses pulse width modulation as control and it has gone faulty.
