Hi,

I laid a Real Wood Solid Oak Floor about 6 months ago. The Floor was glued down and I left an expansion slot around the sides. The floor was laid onto Chipboard "floor boards" which appeared to be flat.

Unfortunately I never put any underlay underneath it and I'm now getting gaps appearing between the strips at random areas.

Can this be fixed by lifting it again and putting underlay underneath it ? Will this solve the Gaps appearing again or is it best to Nail it down next time ? In my last house I nailed down the real wood floor (using tool hired from HSS) and never had any problems with it - although I did use an underlay the last time as the Floor was not so flat.

Any help would be appreciated to recover this bad situation....

Thanks
A.

Did you glue straight on to the chipboard or did you ply it first as you should have done?

There's a possibility that the adhesive has reacted with the chipboard.

Not sure why you think an underlayment would have helped when you fully bonded the floor?
Flooringman has a point, but don't forget it's a very dry season now - low air humidity - which normally can result in shrinkage of boards, no matter which installation method you used.

If you glued the floor down, what brand/type of adhesive did you use?

Yep, in a month or two when we can finally turn our heating down or off!! your gaps might just disappear..
