Gaps between floorboards

Hi All

Last year we had the (original Victorian) pine floors in our kitchen sanded, stained and varnished. However, at the time we did not think about fixing the gaps between about six of the floorboards - some up to 10-12mm wide.

Now the gaps are really starting to get to me. I have tried cutting thin strips of plywood and pine with the ciruclar saw and jigsaw but despite hours haven't got very far. We also tried glue and sawdust (?!?) to no avail. So ... my girlfriend suggested I ask the guys at DIYnot.com to see what suggestions you all have!

(Because we had a new kitchen fitted last summer and five boards run from the hallway (no real problems with the gaps there) we would like to avoid taking them up and relaying them butted against each other.)

the trouble with gaps are they change

so your filler thats firmly attached now will crack and detach over the next year or so

to be honest a 12mm gap is a cravass and the only way is to relay the planks without any gaps

There are company specialist restore flooring etc can't remember the name of them but they use something like a flexible string or rope and use resin in the gap and then buff it up to the same colour of the flooring. Have a look in yellow pages for floor specialists if it is there.

It might sort out some of your less obvious gaps.

If you can't cut a 12mm piece of board and insert it in the gap - then it is your skill that's at fault.
