Hi, we are moving to a new house shortly and the gargae door looks like it needs replacing as it is too short at the bottom due to level differences.

Due to being broken into before I am not keen on the up and over type and am thinking of a roller shutter type that will fit all the way down to the current level and can be adjusted after the levels have been sorted out.

I am fairly competent at most things but understand this may be a two handed job so am contemplating having it fitted, is this an unnecessary expense or a must for this type of door?

Also what happens when there is a problem with the door and it wont open, currently there is no other access into the gargae??

I would go for a roller shutter myself.
There is a method of over-riding them.
This will be discussed with the installers as to what and how it works.

The over-ride can be mechanical or battery depending on the type you get.
For obvious reasons I`m not going to put it on here.

You can do them single handed if you just plan the work ahead, but we always go two handed. Easier.

Thanks Alarm, I am going to measure up this weekend (hopefully) to see if I can work out how to fit it myself.

Whilst I have your attention, I am also thinking about an alarm for the house, I believe to get the insurance discount it needs to be fitted by an acredited fitter, however which type of system would be best for a semi detached house with intergrated garage and only coverage to the ground floor, are the wireless ones OK?

Yes but graded wireless not Response or Yale types.
However if no Police response needed a self fitted graded system may qualify, see your broker/insurer.

Makes to look for, Visonic/Scantronic/Texecom,

SSAIB or NSI sites will give your local accredited installers.
