Hi lads

Decided I need more space so I'm widening my garage, currently 4m x 5100 and 2100 in height, Its an old old asbestos sheet garage built with 2x2 and has 3 2x2 A frames on a little pitched roof.

My plan (and currently under going) is to strap 4x2 to the gable end of the house using Through Wall Bolts M12 180mm and use joist hangers from this with 4x2 to sit on top of the 2x2 of the garage (ridge level). I have done the first 2 beams, but there is a little bounce, my concern is that the 2x2 wont take the weight of 12 4x2 beams, OSB sheets and 3 layers of felt and myself.

So... Would I be better to leave the current 2x2 at ridge level running front to back (5.1m) and also run 4x2 full length as extra support, but I only have 4.8m timber from the suppliers here, so can I use 2 4.8m 4x2 and bolt them together to make 5.1m if that makes sense, and would that adequate to support?

Cheers

Yes - it is possible to use 4" x 2" (or lesser section) but you will need to build 'trusses' for the roof as opposed to a ridged roof system. This would mean making triangulated trusses, braced (gusseted) together with say a layer of sheathing ply, which could be fixed to the tops of the walls.

Personally, I feel it would be cheaper to approach a truss manufacturer and have a bunch of trusses made. The walls should be ok, but I'd be inclined to reinforce the corners with some angle brackets etc. Stops the structure from swaying whilst the roof is off.

I think the extension should be self supporting and just butt up against the existing structure. i.e. don't rely on the existing ridge beam to carry any weight of the new bit.
