I have electric supply in my garage, but would like to have a light. I am not confident enough to wire one up. Is there any way I could use a light fitted with a plug that has a switch that could be attached to the wall? ( a bit like a table lamp )

How many sockets have you got in the garage? Can you spare one for a light? Is there one in a sensible place for it to be used for a light, i.e. that you could find in the dark?
