Hi,

Wondered if anyone could offer advice on how to remove rusted garden chair legs.

The thread of the legs are inside so have tried "liquid wrench" penetrating oil but despite 20+ applications they wont budge.

One of the legs came off with brute force so have added pictures to illustrate point.

I dont mind causing cosmetic damage if need be.

Thnx

Heat. That will expand the outer a bit.
Try a lighter if you don't have a blow torch or other.

stilsons (pipe wrench)

heat, f it worked, would only work if you got it hot, at which point the paint would have melted
stilsons would absolutely work with minimal paint damage

Do you think a heat gun would work?

Ive got a dewalt paint stripper.

try it - have you got a pair of pliers to grip the bit you are turning ?

It is not rusted in place, the thread we can see is in good condition. Oil and heat probably won't help. It is just tight, you need something to grip the bar to get some turning force
a big set of pliers - mole grips - stilsons

Op did say. I don't mind cosmetic damage hence I said heat. It's standard practice on rusted fittings

Ive tried mole grips and every type of plier in my tool shed.

The poles are round and everything just slips off.

Brute force isnt going to work.

Neither myself or friend who are both gym rats cant shift them. And trust me weve tried.

Dribble Plus Gas into the joint. Nothing else is as good.

You can then heat it with a hot air gun which is less damaging than a blowlamp. Apply more Plus Gas as it cools and it will be drawn inside.

You can wrap the tube with medium abrasive paper to prevent your tools slipping. Water pump pliers are particularly good for gripping tube.

Joints like this, with a large threaded area will need to be heated red hot......which will say goodbye to the wicker, unfortunately.

Does anyone know if these penetrating oils eventually get through the rust on threads - lets say if i keep on applying several times daily?

For sure, it can’t do any harm but there’s going to be some force needed at the end of the day.
Is it possible for you to clamp the leg in a vice as you turn the chair? You’ll have to consider the crushing aspect of course.
John

You could try a couple of drops of diesel, its good at penetrating. Load an old paint brush to wipe over the joints then use some stilsons or mole grips.

So went with the monkey wrench option and have managed to snap off all the legs.

Good news is some thread did come out so can probably get them back on with a couple of turns.

My next question is does anyone know if JB cold weld epoxy would be strong enough to hold the legs in place with someone sitting on the chair?
