A small clue could be in his forum name, Kevin D Gas !

Boiler defo has a permanent pilot, and may be a VERY simple fix. Get onto someone to arrange visit for when you plan to visit. That may give the RGI time to return with parts if required before you leave. tell the RGI when phoning the type pf boiler and nature of fault, some guys are scared witless by these, as (OMG!!!) they have an open flue. In reality simple.

thanks FiremanT..hope it's just the thermo-couple. I won't do the job though I have replaced them in a propane "wood-stove".

Will hopefully be able to get the guy who has serviced it for years (later today). Will see what he says post fix and service..but it may be time to think about a new boiler. I think I'd prefer a heat only boiler not a combi. Is it possible to build a small (well insulated) boiler-house on the outside wall of the house where the existing flue and gas supply are for the baxi..and put a wall-mounted boiler in it?..or is that plain daft?

Fine to build an external home for the new heat only boiler.

But it will need it's own concentric flue as the old flue will be unsuitable.

You will save about 30% on gas but will need to add an electric fire if you must have one.

You cannot really continue to use the old Baxi fire if the boiler is not in use.

Technically if the boiler is decommissioned you can in theory.

But Baxi and any GS inspector will usually advise against it.

thanks both. > agile..interesting re a new home for the boiler...any links to designs or pics? So a new flue up the existing stack..with mods at the top end of course. Does anyone do a B/F gas boiler?
Any good makes of boiler..I've heard Worcester and Vaillant mentioned as being ok?

When I spoke to Baxi last, they said safe to use the fire
If the appliance is working safely, why should a GS inspector have any qualms?
It is Baxi who make the rules regarding their product.

will probably ditch the gas fire when we decommission the boiler..it's a bit of lump in quite a small lounge.

Are you saying the fire can't be used when the boiler is off?.....maybe you're confused with regard to operating the boiler when fire front is removed???
