I need a gas cooker installed to replace our old one. The electric socket is in place as is the gas pipe complete with bayonet fitting. Most of our local gas fitters are too busy to take on such a small job. However I have been given the name of an ex gas safe engineer who due to a hand condition cannot carry on working on normal stuff but carry’s on doing work as a competent person. Would I be safe, legally, using this chap or is it best to wait for a gas safe engineer to be free.

If he’s installing it for free then yes absolutely fine. If you intend on paying him, then if you don’t get caught and there’s no issue then fine. The law states competence only for no reward or gain, otherwise, work should be carried out by a registered business.

Thanks for your reply. He Has asked for £70 to fit it which I thought was a bit steep, maybe I’m out of touch with the price of things today. He only has to push the bayonet pipe on and test it.
