Gas Fire Ignition Problem

My Valor gas fire failed to ignite so I

1. replaced the battery
2. checked the the connections on the three wires
3. replaced the electronic spark generator (nearly £50!!)
4. tried holding the ignition wire next to earth

Still no spark???

Any suggestions would be much appreciated
