Dear all,

Looking for some advice.

Currently we have an inset gas fire in our lounge, installed in 98. The fire is rubbish, all the heat goes up the chimney and it does not seem to heat the room.

We're looking to replace it but our fireplace is causing an issue. It's made up of rough textured bricks which means there's no flat edge around the hole for a fire surround to fit flush. A stove might be able to sit on the hearth but we think this would look weird.

Any ideas to how we could fit a new fire, without having to replace the hearth and mantel, etc? Thanks

Most modern inset fires suffer the same problem. Fires are not used as a primary heat source by most people now so efficiency goes out the window in favour of looks.

You could try and source a freestanding unit but these tend to be ugly beasts.

A few clues in the OP reveals the fire is a inset tray - these are the WORST gas fires, and in a prewarmed room can have a NEGATIVE effective efficiency.

There are options:
This fire, for example, has a rear panel which can be fitted and sealed to a rough wall. the panel is concealed behind the decorative trim, and , without looking, will have an efficiency of 60 - 65% on high, against an ugly outset at about 75%.

An alternative, but not always practical, is a marble panel with a 22x16" cut out, which can be sealed against the wall. A high efficiency (80%) fire can then be fitted into it.
