Gas & Water Main

Hi everyone,

I've had British Gas out this morning to fit a gas meter at my new house (Gas main terminates in the house but has been capped off). Engineer said that when he uncapped it there was no supply coming in so couldn't fit a meter. The house has been empty for a good few years so it looks like it's been properly disconnected by the nat. grid.

I've looked in to having a new supply fitted and because of the savings I'll probably dig the trench myself for the new pipe. I've also got the water board out soon to fit a stop tap in the street as there wasn't an existing one. The water supply from mains to my house is lead.

My question is this: If I'm digging a trench for the gas pipe is it worth laying a new plastic water main at the same time? Apart from the differing depths (425mm vs 1m), how far apart do the pipes need to be?

I should add that my drive is horrid tarmac at the mo so I don't mind messing it up!

Water main at about a metre , gas at about 375mm in same trench Main sleeved entire run in blue and sealed at end, gas should also be sleeved but in yellow, and sealed at external point.
