There doesn't seem to be anything on the how-to sites about seldom-used residential gate valves which do not completely stop the water flow when shut. After sweating the gate valve body to the pipe, is there a way to re-assemble it to ensure that the valve is properly adjusted?

Problems with gate valves are usually caused by the incorrect siting of valves on installation. Gate valves should only be installed on vertical pipe runs. This stops th accumulation of debris in the valve seat which is the cause of the valve not shutting properly. Also, gate valves should not be used on pipes at mains pressure. As to reassembly, there is no adjustment required as the gate travel is restricted by the valve seat.
