I have an outdoor water tap with a gate valve indoors so that I can ensure that the water is turned off from indoors. The gate valve is leaking and wont tighten up any further, so I need to replace it. My question is, is there any difference between a stop cock and a gate valve and any preference to which I should use? Bear in mind that the water is not turned on very often.

Not a gate valve for mains pressure. A stopcock, a ball-o-fix type isolating valve or a lever valve. The lever valve would be the easiest to use if you regularly turn it on and off.
